Ula Oil & Gas Offshore Project

July 2010

Over 250 SharpEye 40/40I Triple IR Optical Flame Detectors were supplied recently to the ULA Oil & Gas offshore project in the Norwegian southern part of the North Sea.

BP is the operator of the field with 80% interest in the project. BP's partner, DONG Energy, holds 20% interest. The field has three conventional steel facilities with production, drilling, living quarters. The oil is transported by pipeline via Ekofisk to Teesside. All gas is re-injected into the reservoir in order to increase oil recovery. The existing gas process plant was recently extended with a new module, turbine and compressor and has been operative since 2008.

The 40/40I Triple IR (IR3) Flame Detector selected for this project detects fuel and gas fires at long distances with the highest immunity to false alarms. It can detect a 1 ft2 (0.1 m2) gasoline pan fire at 215 ft (65 m) in less than 5 seconds. The detector is the most durable and weather resistant flame detector currently on the market, featuring a heated window, to eliminate condensation and icing; HART capabilities for digital communications; lower power requirements; and a compact, lightweight design. Due to its increased reliability, the 40/40 Series has a 5-year warranty and is SIL2 (TUV) approved to IEC 61508 Safety Integrity requirements.
