Optical Flame & Gas Monitoring for Methane Recovery Plant

March 2009

Spectrex Inc., the world's leader in the development and implementation of optical flame and gas detection and suppression systems, has been selected to provide SharpEye Optical Flame Detectors and SafEye Open Path Gas Detectors for the protection of Cedar Hills Methane Recovery Plant in Maple Valley, WA, USA.

The plant, which is operated by Merichem, has installed twelve (12) SharpEye 20/20SI's to monitor the methane (CH4) storage tanks, six (6) IR3 detectors to monitor the compressor building and activate the water deluge systems on both. In order to detect dangerous unwanted emissions of methane gas, early detection is provided by SafEye Open Path Gas Detection Systems. Two (2) SafEye 226 systems monitoring for CH4 leaks have been installed in the compressor building.

Methane recovery plants are processing landfill gas (LFG) - the natural by-product of the decomposition of solid waste, consisting of methane and carbon dioxide. LFG consists of about 50% methane, the primary component of natural gas, and about 50% carbon dioxide. Instead of allowing the LFG to escape into the air, it can be captured, converted and used as an energy source, like electricity. Plus it helps to prevent the gases from migrating into the atmosphere and contributing to smog and climate change.

The highly flammable methane poses an immediate explosion risk if not detected in time. With flammable limits between 5% up to 75%, its early detection well below its lower flammability limit is a mandatory requirement at methane recovery plants.

The SharpEye 20/20SI Flame Detectors used in this installation offer enhanced reliability and durability with sealed electronics to protect the integrity of the unit when opened for installation or maintenance. However, the 20/20 Series Flame Detectors are being phased out during 2009 and replaced by the new, improved SharpEye 40/40 Series Flame Detectors. Optional new features include a heated window, to eliminate condensation and icing; HART capabilities for digital communications; lower power requirements; and a compact, lightweight, but highly durable and weather-resistant design. The 40/40 Series is highly reliable, with an extended 5-year warranty and compliance with the IEC 61508 Safety Integrity requirements of SIL2. The detectors are performance approved to EN54-10 and FM3260 and have been granted all the required approvals.

The SafEye 226 Open Path Gas Detection System monitors methane fugitive emissions over a distance of up to 295 ft in the compressor building. The system's robust housing and reliable performance at extreme temperatures makes it ideal for use in turbine enclosures, compressor rooms and other similar high-risk/high-value industrial facilities.
